New airport in Al-Ula to become operational next year Saturday, January 24, 2009
The new airport being constructed in Al-Ula, located close to the world famous historical site of Madain Saleh in Saudi Arabia, at a cost of SAR143 million, will become operational next year.
The project includes construction of a passenger lounge to accommodate 190 people per hour, runway with a length of 3,050 meters and width of 60 meters, air control facilities and buildings for light systems and installation of firefighting and rescue services, generators, and air-conditioners.
The new airport is expected to boost tourism in the region especially after the selection of Madain Saleh as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
